The Redskins are working out a couple of the top quarterback prospects in this year’s NFL draft. Here’s how it could affect the NY Giants.

Not many people thought that the Washington Redskins would be in the market for a quarterback with the #2 overall pick in this year’s NFL draft, but that changed when news broke of them interviewing two top prospects. Since the NY Giants hold the fourth-overall selection, this has the potential to really change things for Big Blue.

According to JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington, this is far from just postering.

Via Twitter:

The initial reaction is hoping that this could mean Chase Young might somehow fall to the Giants. However, the truth is that this news is actually not great for the NY Giants, as if the ‘Skins actually do pull the trigger on a quarterback, Big Blue’s trading power goes down significantly.

Losing (winning) the ‘Chase Young Bowl’ will sting for years to come, and I personally have been trying to come up with scenarios where the once-a-decade player could still fall to the Giants. While this scenario increases chances ever so slightly, the truth is that the Lions could be extremely unlikely to pass on Young.

And, with Burrow and Tua presumably off the board in this scenario, it’s unlikely that one of the quarterback-needy teams would trade up to three for Justin Herbert. What would actually happen is the NY Giants would be stuck at four with far fewer options than they anticipated to have, leaving Gettleman to do what he’s always done which is stick with his draft pick and failing to accumulate any extra draft picks.

So while the news is certainly interesting – and sounds encouraging when first heard – this would actually be a negative thing for the NY Giants. The best chance Big Blue has to come out of this first round having maximized its potential bargaining power is for Burrow and Young to go 1-2.

That leaves Detroit likely to take the best non-quarterback available, with the NY Giants then in the driver’s seat to control the draft from there.
