QB2: Cooper Rush

Many have and had already penciled in veteran QB Colt McCoy as the NY Giants’ QB2 the moment he inked his one-year deal with the team. At the time it made sense as he’s surely an infinitely better option than Alex Tanney, but things have changed since then.

Through the Dak Prescott ripple effect – and a coaching change in Dallas – Andy Dalton ended up being signed by the Cowboys as Dak and Jerry Jones continue their messy contract negotiations. As a result, Cooper Rush was let go by the new regime and his biggest fan who happens to be our new offensive coordinator, Jason Garrett, was all too eager to bring him about Big Blue.

The connection is clear as Garrett had groomed Rush through his time in Dallas. After being undrafted and signed by Dallas in 2017, Rush went on to shock the organization and put up 398 passing yards, 6 TD’s and 0 interceptions in his undrafted rookie preseason.

At the time, Kellen Moore was penciled in as the surefire QB2, but Rush skyrocketed all the way from one of the least wanted available quarterbacks in the 2017 NFL draft to the Cowboys’ backup QB by Week 5 of his rookie season. If that doesn’t show you how much Garrett loves Cooper Rush, I’m not sure what to tell you.

Rush held on to the #2 role behind Dak up until Garrett’s firing this offseason, and with how much success Garrett has had coaching and grooming quarterbacks I feel strongly that Cooper Rush is a legit backup QB for the future and that Garrett will have a lot of say on the matter.

Finally, the difference in guaranteed money between Rush and Colt McCoy is only 500k, so that shouldn’t be a factor should one of them end up being cut.
