The NY Giants waited right up until the last minute to make a decision on keeping or cutting Aldrick Rosas; he’ll no long kick for Big Blue.

I’m not sure what new information NY Giants GM Dave Gettleman or new head coach Joe Judge were looking for on kicker Aldrick Rosas, but apparently, they didn’t find it and waited up until the last reasonable possible day to release the legally embattled kicker.

According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN, Rosas has been officially released as of this morning.

Via Twitter:

Rosas was arrested all the way back in June so the team had more than a month to deliberate on whether to keep him or not and I just can’t see how waiting until the day players report to camp puts the NY Giants in an advantageous situation.

Maybe the ugly details of the arrest that were released out to the public this week changed their minds, but even then, make the call right after the piece drops detailing how he hit and ran from the scene of an accident going 100MPH at 8 AM, only to be found walking barefoot a mile away three and a half hours later; not a week later.

I was a strong supporter of giving the former NY Giants All-Pro kicker another chance, as not many players who ever step on an NFL field can ever say they made an All-Pro team, we’re talking about top 3% here.

Even if it was just for one out of the three seasons that he played at that level, he’s still super young and in my mind only played badly last year because he never was able to get rolling, attempting only 6 field goals in the first half of the season.

Now, we’ll never know the true potential of Aldrick Rosas and have opened up another hole on a roster that’s littered with them.

Did he dig his own grave? Of Course.

But it’d be nice to have seen the NY Giants show some compassion and maybe get him some help and try to get him back on track, young kids make mistakes and kickers are harder to find than you think.

Where do the NY Giants stand at kicker now?

As of right now, the NY Giants don’t even have another kicker on their roster, that’s how ill-prepared they were for this moment despite having all that time leading up to training camp.

I’ve discussed other options for Big Blue to replace Aldrick Rosas with before and they ain’t pretty.

If Stephen Gostkowski is healthy, he’s the leader in the clubhouse to get the nod due to his long history with Joe Judge as his special teams coach in New England.

Even though it’s “just kicker”, I still don’t like the idea of bringing in a 37-year-old injured player to replace a 25-year-old booming with potential in a rebuild, but it’s likely what is going to happen (Ryan Succop will get a look if he’s healthy, too).

Even before the arrest, I campaigned for the NY Giants to use one of their three 7th rounders on a kicker due to Rosas’ on-field play alone as an insurance policy and you can bet Dave Gettleman is kicking himself for that now.

They’ll now likely have to use 2 of their 80 roster spots on kickers if they choose to bring in a young player to compete with the newly-signed kicker, and more importantly, to be groomed and have a plan and get a look at a younger, more long-term option.

Combined this with the fact that DeAndre Baker still hasn’t even been told to stay away from training camp as of Sunday morning, and it shows that the NY Giants haven’t exactly handled these arrest situations well as you want to get out in front of these type of things as much as you can — even if it’s just a (real) statement.
