Derek Carr’s inaccuracy masked the NY Giants’ lack of a pass-rush

Derek Carr was wildly inaccurate throughout Sunday’s game.

While NY Giants defensive back Xavier McKinney made Carr pay, with a pair of interceptions — including a pick-six, the Raiders’ quarterback’s struggles masked one of New York’s defense’s biggest inadequacies.

Carr floated a pass over tight end Darren Waller’s head in the end zone in the first half, and in the fourth quarter nearly missed a wide open running back Josh Jacobs in the slot, when had the pass been on target he might have waltzed into the end zone.

If Carr makes either of those throws, the outcome is likely very different

Yes, the NY Giants’ strip-sack sealed the victory, but for much of the game Carr had plenty of time to direct traffic from the pocket and have his way with New York’s defense. Just as Patrick Mahomes did, especially in the second half last week.

Leonard Williams and Azeez Ojulari are the only NY Giants defenders with more than four sacks.

Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham’s unit has certainly made strides the past three weeks, or so, but still do not have a dominant pass-rush presence that makes a consistent impact on a game.

That’s fine and adequate against an inconsistent quarterback, but will lower the ceiling on this defense and this team.
