After allowing Dave Gettleman to retire, and firing Joe Judge, the New York Giants could have a dramatically different front office shopping in free agency this offseason

The New York Giants have an interesting off-season ahead of them.

Following the firing of former head coach Joe Judge, the retirement of GM Dave Gettelman, and numerous massive decisions to make throughout the roster, this team is about to undergo an array of changes.

This Giants’ roster has its fair share of holes but many could be addressed if the offseason is handled correctly. New York has two picks in the first 10 selections and five picks through the first three rounds. Several gaps on this roster will inevitably be addressed through the players the New York Giants choose to select, but that won’t fix everything. This is where free agency will come into play.

New York also has its fair share of problems in terms of money.

They currently have over $200 million wrapped up in players currently on the roster, which is the fifth-most in the NFL. The lack of cap space will lead to the Giants having to make decisions on several big players.

Moving on from veterans such as Blake Martinez, Sterling Shepard, or James Bradberry is a real possibility for this team. While doing this may hurt this team in the short team, in the long term it could be exactly what needs to be done.

Whether the New York Giants are able to free up money, they will have to make additions to this roster through free agency. With so much money locked into big-name players already, the Giants will have to look at players who could be looking to sign cheaper deals.

Whether these players are returning from injury or coming off of a breakout year, they may be willing to sign cheaper contracts to solidify their spots in the NFL.

Here’s a look at five bargain free agents the New York Giants should target

Safety Marcus Maye

Marcus Maye is coming off of an Achilles injury that unfortunately will impact how much he gets paid this offseason.

The veteran safety appeared in just six games for the Jets this season before suffering the season-ending injury.

The potential loss of Jabrill Peppers would be lessened by the addition of a player of Maye’s caliber. Through six games of this season, Maye was playing the best football of his career. He recorded 46 tackles and four tackles for loss.

His 2020 season, where Maye appeared in all 16 games, showed what he is capable of. He intercepted two passes and defended another 11. He also forced two fumbles.

Due to his injury, Maye will more than likely be in line for a one-year prove it deal. By signing him and putting him alongside Xavier McKinney and Julian Love, this would be one of the more talented and young secondaries in the NFL.
