Joe Schoen, during his introductory press conference as New York Giants general manager, says he’s committed to building around Daniel Jones
New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen made it clear during his introductory press conference Wednesday, the organization is committed to Daniel Jones, and he plans to build around the fourth-year quarterback.
There had been some question over just how committed the Giants are to Jones, chosen with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, following a woefully disappointing 2021 campaign and uncertainty over his future due to a neck injury that ended his season in early December.
But, Schoen says he is forging ahead with Jones as the New York Giants’ quarterback.
"“I’ve looked at Daniel,” Schoen told reporters. “Once the new staff gets in here, we’re going to get together; offensive coordinator, head coach, the entire staff, dive into the film as a group and look at what Daniel does best and allow him to put his best foot forward.”"
Can Joe Schoen build a New York Giants roster out to boost Daniel Jones?
Jones is coming off an injury-riddled season, in which he completed 64.3 percent of his passes for 2,428 yards with just 10 touchdowns to seven interceptions.
However, Jones withstood a nearly constant barrage of pressure, being sacked 38 times as a patchwork offensive line was little resistance for some of the NFL’s premier rushers.
Schoen, and the New York Giants have a major decision looming; whether to pick up — or decline Jones’ fifth-year option, which would put New York on the hook for $21.3 million in 2023.
It sounds as though the organization is all in on giving Jones the best opportunity to prove he can follow in the footsteps of an MVP caliber quarterback Schoen helped scout, draft, and build around with the Bills; Josh Allen.
"“I know he’s a great kid, he’s been in this building the past two days, there’s not anyone in this building who has said a bad thing about his work ethic, desire to win, he has physical ability with his arm-strength, accuracy, he can run.“When the new staff gets in here, we’ll build an offense around Daniel to accentuate what he does best.”"
