Despite a terrible salary cap situation, the New York Giants and Joe Schoen should make an effort to retain two key players when free agency begins

The New York Giants are far more likely to spend the next three weeks before the league year begins and free agency opens trimming salary rather than planning to be big players on the open market.

That’s because the Giants currently sit approximately $12 million over the cap, meaning new general manager Joe Schoen will have some difficult decisions to make in the coming weeks simply to get in compliance with the cap before free agency opens.

An argument can be made that former general manager Dave Gettleman handed Schoen a bigger mess of a roster than he inherited from his predecessor, Jerry Reese when he arrived in 2018.

But, Schoen has already gotten down to work preparing for the offseason.

According to team sources, the New York Giants’ coaching staff is already knee-deep in preparing for free agency.

Those plans, despite the New York Giants’ horrible cap situation, should include a pair of players that could prove to be building blocks for the team’s future.
