2022 NFL Draft: Ranking New York Giants’ top 3 mid-round edge rushers
DeAngelo Malone, Western Kentucky
DeAngelo Malone played very solid this season, tallying seven sacks, 8 QB hits, 23 QB hurries, 79 combined tackles, 4 forced fumbles, and 17 tackles for loss in 14 games.
Something that separates Malone from the most of the other edge rushers in this draft class is that he is a much more well rounded player. Flashing the ability to be a 4-down player, DeAngelo Malone gained a run defense grade of 75.3, and a pass coverage grade of 62.3 per, PFF.
While these grades are usually nothing too crazy, it is nice to see the potential Malone could have in those aspects.
As for some things Malone needs to work on, for starters, he must become better at playing contain in both the run and pass game.
There are far too many occasions in the games where Malone would either look at the wrong player, or over-commit on certain plays that would cost him to get beat off the edge by a runner.
Another thing Malone needs to work on is to just simply be more consistent when rushing the QB. While he does a great job as a pass rusher, there are moments where it seems like he is making up what he is going to do on the spot, causing him to become very inconsistent at times.
Now for the good.
Malone does a lot of good as a player.
For example, he plays with an unwavering energy that makes it very difficult for opposing offensive players to keep up with him.
Alongside this, Malone plays with an elite level of speed and agility off the edge, leaving the possibility for him to make an inside cut on his man available, which could become a great move in the NFL.
In addition to this, he has potential as a four-down player. If he can work on, and potentially fix the couple of issues I mentioned, I believe DeAngelo Malone has the potential to be a great player in this league.
