In case you didn’t hear, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel has asked for a trade. Apparently, he wants out of Golden Gate City and as you probably guessed, fans of every other NFL team are salivating at the idea of their favorite franchise doing whatever it takes to land his services.

When it comes to the New York Giants, they could definitely use more help at wide receiver but not at what will be a huge asking price. It’s no secret that heading into the 2022 NFL Draft, wide receiver is definitely an area of opportunity to draft additional talent to the positional group. But should the Giants consider pulling off a massive trade to land Samuel in the city that never sleeps?

In the grand scheme of things, no. Even though it would be a dream come true if the Giants could land a proven wide receiver that does it all and then some when the football is in his hands, they have other more important areas of concern to address first. Before they can even fathom parting way with premier draft picks and/or players for Samuel, it’s crucial for them to address their offensive line first before any such idea.

The New York Giants should not trade for Deebo Samuel

The Giants are heading into the 2022 NFL Draft with two top-ten draft picks at No. 5 and 7 as you better believe they’d have to part ways with at least one of those picks and more to entice the 49ers for such a trade. Plus, at the time of this writing, there is no guarantee the 49ers would even grant Samuel’s wishes for a trade since he’s technically still under contract until 2023.

At that time, Samuel will be an unrestricted free agent so perhaps the 49ers might consider a trade if a team comes calling with a huge offer they can’t refuse. However, for all the football world knows, this could just be a little spat between both sides as Samuel undoubtedly wants a huge contract extension before next year. It remains to be seen if handling this the way he has been will work but at any rate, this isn’t anything the Giants should entertain getting involved in at all.

They have nine draft picks to work with and should keep every single one of them as they do their best to rebuild their roster the right way. The top teams in the NFL that consistently make the NFL Playoffs all share the same strategy of building a winner through the draft. This is why you need all your draft picks to work with as it leads to building a stronger and more consistent foundation for the future.

Parting with any of their top draft picks to trade for Samuel, without first bolstering their offensive line through the draft with better talent, will easily be a recipe for disaster. Without a great offensive line protecting your quarterback to do what he does best, it doesn’t really matter who your wide receivers are.

At the end of the day, the Giants have a lot of work cut out for themselves over these next few years to see if they can once again go back to their winning ways. With several losing seasons and fans continuing to be frustrated with what they’ve seen on the field from the Giants, the last thing anyone wants to see is this franchise parting ways with highly valuable draft picks for an elite wide receiver on a team with no offensive line worth speaking about.
