All eyes are on the NY Giants as they prepare for what should be a wild week heading into the 2022 NFL Draft. Last week, Big Blue started off voluntary minicamp and as always, the rumor mill was running wild based on who showed up and who didn’t. Rumors circulated around wide receiver Kadarius Toney potentially being on the trading block and another wide receiver that could be on the move.

As reported by Dan Duggan of The Athletic, the Giants might be willing to trade wide receiver Darius Slayton in a salary cap move to free up some more space. The Giants still need to clear up some more considering they have to sign this year’s draft class so perhaps as the draft draws closer, they could pull something off.

In the grand scheme of things, the fact that general manager Joe Schoen is willing to make such moves proves that nobody is safe on the roster. This is what it should be in order to usher in a new era that’s built on hard work, transparency, and having a final roster of football players ready to do whatever it takes to win more football games.

No player is safe on the NY Giants roster as redemption season starts now

In just three seasons with the Giants, Slayton has totaled 1,830 receiving yards, 124 receptions, and just 13 touchdowns. He dealt with some injuries last season (hamstring) but it’s still unclear if he’s worth keeping around for the long haul. He’s a decent wide receiver but not a No. 1 elite player in the positional group or anything.

Schoen and even head coach Brian Daboll had made it clear that the Giants are “open for business” and rightfully so. Considering how abysmal the Giants have been over the past few years, not a single player on the roster should feel safe when it comes to their roster spot or position on the depth chart.

The Giants could get some much-needed salary cap relief by trading Slayton and simply draft his replacement with one of their nine draft picks. If the trade rumors are true, it’s good to see that this message is still clear considering that this new leadership regime has no ties at all to anyone currently on the roster. It’s about time the Giants instituted this to hopefully get back to their winning ways sooner rather than later.

It remains to be seen what rumors are true or just done to confuse other opposing teams but at the end of the day, it looks like the Giants are finally getting back on track. Hopefully, any upcoming trades, cuts, salary cap casualties, and their upcoming draft class all make sense with everything falling into place over these next few years.
