Either new general manager Joe Schoen will be known as a legend or someone who completely dropped the ball for the NY Giants in the 2022 NFL Draft. Besides taking a good and moldable offensive guard in Joshua Ezeudu out of North Carolina, it looks like Schoen is continuing the trend of taking a risk with players that aren’t exactly the most popular on draft boards.
With the No. 81 overall pick in this year’s draft, the Giants selected cornerback Cordale Flott out of LSU and the first thing that comes to mind is another developmental player. There’s nothing wrong with that since these are the kinds of players that can be molded towards greatness over the course of a few years. The only thing is that it’ll be important to have patience in the grand scheme of things which will be key in their overall development.
At 6-0 and 175 lbs, Flott truly made a name for himself for being a decent cornerback that can keep up with any opposing receiving option thrown in front of him. Just like Ezeudu, Flott brings versatility to the Giants with experience also at safety and in nickel defensive formations.
NY Giants draft another versatile player in cornerback Cordale Flott
In three seasons at LSU, Flott totaled 98 tackles, one interception, and 10 passes defended. Again, these numbers don’t exactly scream on the stats sheet but at any rate, the Giants do have a new coaching staff and a new head coach that will do their best to take Flott to the next level in due time.
The areas of opportunity Flott will need to work on are adjusting to the obviously faster speed in the NFL and truly mastering his assignments in the heat of the moment. At any rate, expect to see Flott in a rotational role in the Giants’ secondary as quality depth that can fill in when his number is called.
What is most exciting about Flott is his ability to jump in and give it his all as he was definitely showcasing this on LSU every time he stepped foot on the field. Once he gets used to life in the NFL, he should thrive with Big Blue in a secondary that could easily use his natural raw abilities to try and be a difference-maker.
As the Giants prepare for Day 3 of this year’s draft, Schoen still has some areas of need to address, especially on defense now that Flott is in the mix. The Giants still need help at linebacker, another pass rusher, and definitely a safety. Hopefully, Schoen gets it right as the Giants wrap things up over the weekend and welcome in a new draft class of players hungry to play for the city that never sleeps.
