NY Giants Day 2 Target: 1. Cornerback

Ahead of round one, there had been a number of rumors and expert mock drafts which linked the Giants with both Ahmad Gardner and Derek Stingley Jr. As it played out on the first night of the draft, the Giants didn’t get a chance at either pick, with the NY Jets and Houston Texans selecting the talented cornerbacks.

With James Bradberry likely to be traded ahead of the 2022 season, cornerback represents a massive need on this roster. Luckily for the Giants, with the way the first round played out the team has an incredible opportunity to add a top talent at the position on Day 2 of the draft.

The Giants currently have a talented young corner in Adoree Jackson. With cornerbacks often being left on an island in Wink Martindale’s defense, they will certainly need more than just Jackson. While first-year player Aaron Robinson certainly showed flashes, it is unlikely the team is confident he will be able to fill the hole left by the likely departure of Bradberry.

In terms of the Giants draft board ahead of Day 2, the likes of Andrew Booth Jr. and Jalen Pitre will no doubt feature right at the top. It’s not just the top of the second round which will feature talented cornerbacks, however. A group of secondary pieces such as Kyle Gordon, Roger McCreary, and Cam Taylor-Britt are all possibilities for the Giants’ third-round pick at 67 overall.

Summary

The way the first round played out on Thursday night has set the Giants up for what could be a franchise-altering draft class. Having addressed the two most pressing needs on the roster, with two of the best players in the draft, the top-ranked pieces which have slid into the second round all represent key needs for this roster. With Booth Jr. and Dean still available, the Giants can likely add another first-round level talent to a position of need, and kickstart the Joe Schoen era in New York.
