Earlier in the week, the NY Giants made the expected move in releasing James Bradberry. With a cap hit of $21.8 million for the 2022 season, the writing was on the wall for the former Pro Bowl cornerback. Now, Bradberry is a free agent and he’s already receiving a ton of interest from teams across the country.

With that said, most teams have already signed their main targets in free agency and spent a handsome amount of cash. Will this have an impact on Bradberry’s market? If you ask former standout NFL wide receiver Torrey Smith, the Giants screwed Bradberry a bit in cutting him so late. Does he have a point?

What choice did the Giants have here? General manager Joe Schoen tried trading Bradberry both before and after the 2022 NFL Draft. According to The Athletic’s Dan Duggan, the Giants and Houston Texans had a trade in place for Bradberry, with the G-Men getting a late-round pick in return.

However, that fell through because the Texans and Bradberry couldn’t get on the same page in their contract talks. This was a bummer for New York, who ended up releasing him soon after. Bradberry is reportedly receiving interest from the Eagles, Colts, Chiefs, Raiders and several other squads.

He’s a starting cornerback who could make quite the impact for a new defense. Last season, he recorded a career-high four interceptions. In 2020, he earned Pro Bowl honors and posted three picks. At 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, he’s got great size for a corner and he has a knack for getting to the ball. It should only be a matter of time before he finalizes a new deal.

If you ask Smith, though, the Giants didn’t do Bradberry any favors throughout the process and he thinks more people should be calling out the front office for how they treated the veteran defensive back.

This was a complicated situation, but Bradberry doesn’t appear to have any ill will towards the organization, as he posted an emotional Instagram post to say goodbye to the team. Giants fans everywhere will be rooting for him next season, they just hope he won’t land with Philly.
