Here we are in late May and there’s been no resolution between the Cleveland Browns and former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield. With Deshaun Watson in town, it’s his offense to run and Mayfield is waiting to see if he’ll be traded or not. For the NY Giants, the Mayfield to East Rutherford rumors had been swirling for a while.
Now, though, the team looks set to ride with Daniel Jones as the starting quarterback for 2022. In OTAs, Jones is not only looking sharp while learning the new offense being implemented, but he’s also displaying some new-found confidence. Some fans out there wanted NY to trade for Mayfield, but going with Jones for this upcoming season is 100 percent the right move.
NY Giants QB Daniel Jones will prove to be a better option than Baker Mayfield
We’d be stating the obvious when we say that Jones has struggled during his time with the G-Men. He looked pretty strong at times during his rookie season, throwing for 3,027 yards and 24 touchdowns. It gave the NY faithful a great taste of what he’d be able to do in the future for this team.
However, things have only gone downhill since then. In 2020, Jones tossed for 2,943 yards, 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. That was a big yikes from him. Then in 2021, he missed most of the campaign due to his neck injury, throwing for 2,428 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 11 games.
With offensive coordinator Mike Kafka making his way over from the Kansas City Chiefs, however, there’s plenty of promise for Jones in 2022. The fact that he’s playing with some swag and being upbeat during OTAs only make things better. Jones could have been down in the dumps over his fifth-year option being declined.
Instead, he appears to be using that as motivation. With a strong showing in 2022 – coming after the team went 4-13 last year – it could cement Jones’ status as the QB for this team for years to come. He knows that if he struggles, he’ll be out of a job and he’ll have to look for a new home in free agency.
Meanwhile for Mayfield, his status is totally up in the air and no one knows what will happen. Schoen could have turned his back on Jones and made a trade for Mayfield, but the Giants and head coach Brian Daboll want to see what Jones is made off. Giving him another shot this fall is no doubt the right decision, as Mayfield wouldn’t have solved the team’s issues in the long run.
