Wink Martindale shows he couldn’t be happier with Kayvon Thibodeaux
There are some new players in East Rutherford making noise at OTAs, but don’t forget about the coaching changes that have arrived. Among the biggest gets for the NY Giants this offseason was landing Wink Martindale to take over as the new defensive coordinator. Martindale, who made his way over from Baltimore, has loads of experience.
The veteran assistant has won over plenty of Giants fans, as he’s ready for this defense to take the next step. He’s also got his eyes on No. 5 overall pick Kayvon Thibodeaux, who is also making plenty of noise at practices. Martindale made it quite clear he’s a big fan of the Oregon Duck and he’s ready to help the pass-rusher reach his potential.
Wink Martindale has loved Kayvon Thibodeaux’s game for quite some time
"“He was my number one guy (in the draft) coming out of the process,” Martindale said. “He’s going to be a lot of fun to be around…“I think that he’s a bright, very football smart kid that has a lot of aspirations and goals. We all want our kids to have aspirations and goals, so I’ve loved him since day one.”"
Martindale knows just how good Thibodeaux can be for his defense and the expectations indeed will be high for him. People in New York are hopeful that Thibodeaux can break Azeez Ojulari’s rookie sacks record of eight, which he recorded last season. That won’t be easy, and some don’t think Thibodeaux will have what it takes, but the potential sure is there.
There’s loads of pressure with being the No. 5 overall pick. Some of the Giants’ first-rounders haven’t quite worked out as planned in recent years, but Thibodeaux doesn’t want to fall under that same category. Neither does Martindale, which is why he’ll help take the youngster under his wing and provide him with plenty of guidance.
As we’ve mentioned before on GMenHQ, the morale is high for the Giants right now and this feels like a totally different squad. The future feels bright for the roster, with Thibodeaux of course being part of things. Perhaps no one will be happier to see him succeed this fall than Martindale.
