NY Giants not trading for Russell Wilson was a blessing in disguise

Remember when the NY Giants were linked with a potential trade for Russell Wilson? The former Seattle Seahawks quarterback wasn’t happy at Lumen Field and it felt like a divorce from the team that drafted him was going to happen sooner than later. Wilson ended up getting his wish, as he was shipped to the Denver Broncos.

With that said, there was a time when the Giants looked like serious threats to potentially get him to town and fans were calling for the front office to make something happen. Fast forward to present time and it’s no doubt a major win for the franchise that they sat back and let someone else grab Wilson. His rumored contract demands should be enough to scare anyone away.

Russell Wilson contract demands are going to be insane

Wilson worth $50 million a year? Not on this planet. Keep in mind too that the gun-slinger is 33 years old and he turns 34 in November. Do people really think Wilson is going to be able to keep pace with the likes of Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady, who have both seemingly gotten better as they’ve aged?

It’d be one thing if Wilson was a baller last year and helped the Seahawks go on another deep postseason run. Instead, the team went 7-10 and Wilson and the offense looked incredibly sluggish at times. It was tough to watch for fans and even people in Seattle were calling for John Schneider to send him to a new team.

Imagine had the Giants traded for him. New York would have had to part ways with multiple first-round picks and then build the future of the franchise around an aging quarterback, who would also want to receive an enormous new contract. It really would have been a lose-lose for the G-Men. Thankfully, they were able to be levelheaded in this case and now Kayvon Thibodeaux and Evan Neal are both in East Rutherford.

Wilson very well could go on to have a big year for Denver, but he hasn’t even played a single game yet and there’s already contract headaches for the fanbase. Meanwhile for the Giants, they’ll be ready to rock with Daniel Jones this fall. If things don’t go well for Danny Dimes, then the team could use its 2023 first-round pick on a young stud QB next spring. That feels like a way better move than had they rolled the dice with Wilson.
