Former NY Giants WR Golden Tate signs with baseball team out of nowhere
Who in the world saw this move coming? While NY Giants fans loved hearing Golden Tate gas up the potential of Daniel Jones for this upcoming season, people were also waiting to see whether or not Tate would end up signing a contract with a new team. Well, Tate has signed a deal, just not the kind anyone expected.
It was announced seemingly out of nowhere that Tate is headed to play baseball, as he’s reached an agreement with the Port Angeles Lefties of the West Coast League. The club is located in Washington state, a ferry ride away from Seattle. Port Angeles is a team for college prospects, but now Tate will be ready to make a splash with the squad too.
Golden Tate is chasing his baseball dreams with the Port Angeles Lefties
"“I am extremely thankful to the West Coast League and the Port Angeles Lefties for allowing me to join their league,” Tate said via a press release. “As some might know, I was drafted twice in baseball. As a child, my first love was baseball, so I’m excited about the opportunity to compete against some of the best young players in the league. I look forward to having a lot of fun and exploring baseball more.”"
Tate indeed was drafted twice: in 2007 in the 42nd round and then in 2010 in the 50th round. That second time around came after he was a standout on the baseball field, in addition to the gridiron, for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Tate decided to stick with football and he was drafted in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks.
Tate ended up winning a Super Bowl with Seattle. He bounced around a bit, also suiting up for Lions and Eagles before spending two years with the Giants in 2019 and 2020. Tate posted 84 receptions for 1,064 yards and eight touchdowns in his two campaigns with the G-Men. He’s yet to officially retire from the NFL, but this latest move shows his football days may be behind him.
Who knows, Tate could end up turning this stint with Port Angeles into a bigger opportunity with a minor league club. Regardless of how things turn out, Tate has most definitely made quite the splash with this latest decision and the Port Angeles Lefties no question will be receiving a lot more attention now that a Super Bowl winner is playing for them.
