While the New York Giants, in tandem with the crosstown rival Jets, will often go back and forth with the Buffalo Bills regarding who is New York’s “true” team, the two fanbases remain primarily separated from one another. At least, they did until Isaiah McKenzie had some inflammatory comments.
The Giants remain one of the best-supported teams in the league despite constantly being mired at the bottom of the NFC East and churning through head coaches with regularity. That’s an encouraging sign from a fanbase desperate to see some winning football.
McKenzie would completely ruin any opportunity of reuniting with Brian Daboll and joining the Giants. His comments were so confusing and harsh that it might help make him Public Enemy No. 1 whenever Buffalo makes the trip to MetLife.
McKenzie, who played for Daboll in Buffalo, took shots at both Jets and Giants fans saying that they only go to games for “hot dogs and drinks.” Sure, Isaiah. I’m sure the Giants fans are nearly selling out MetLife in a bad season because they want to pay $11 for chicken tenders and fries, not because they love the team.
Isaiah McKenzie went after New York Giants fans.
I know I speak for everyone on both sides of the New York City football divide when I say that I absolutely love walking 30 minutes from the parking lot to Metlife to pay $14 for a sausage sandwich and a soda. Why else would you even go to the stadium if not for the insane prices and average food?
I’m sure that McKenzie was unaware of the fact that the Giants and Jets routinely ranked near the top of the league in attendance year after year despite horrible football and concession prices that border on price gouging. He must be forgetting how empty the December seats would look during the pre-Allen days in Buffalo.
Giants fans had to watch years of Dave Gettleman-led mismanagement, quarterback shuffling, and some of the worst defenses you will ever see. Do you think they did all that to buy a Bud Light marked up to twice the original price? It’s less offensive than it is completely baffling and disconnected.
The Bills have great fans! No one is disputing that! However, McKenzie’s half-cocked analysis of two fanbases who continue to show up in droves when most other franchises would’ve seen their support plummet only confirms that his opinion on this matter is not to be taken seriously.
