It’s been a heck of a few weeks in terms of different trade speculation surrounding NY Giants running back Saquon Barkley. With him entering the final year of his contract, multiple NFL experts have mentioned the possibility of the G-Men trading him either before the season or at some point in the middle of the campaign.
For general manager Joe Schoen to send him out of town before Week 1 arrives doesn’t make a ton of sense and it looks like the majority of Giants supporters don’t want him to even think about moving the speedster. We fired up a poll to ask Giants Nation their thoughts on if they would be open to a Barkley deal and the majority of people said they want him on the field for their favorite team.
NY Giants trading Saquon Barkley would be a big-time mistake
While the majority of people who participated in the poll want to keep Barkley, it should be noted that plenty of folks are also open to the idea of dealing him. Things really are interesting in this case, as Barkley has battled plenty of injuries during his time at MetLife Stadium, as a torn ACL and ankle issues have held him back in terms of becoming a superstar in the NFC East.
Barkley, a former No. 2 overall pick, kicked things off with a bang during his rookie season, ultimately making his way to the Pro Bowl. That fall in 2018, Barkley rushed for 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns, while adding 721 receiving yards and four more scores. Talk about some unreal production.
Things have gone downhill since then, however, which has led to the trade talks continuing to grow. With that said, Barkley turned plenty of heads during minicamp and he sure looks quite a bit leaner. New head coach Brian Daboll spoke glowingly about his running back during camp, as did offensive coordinator Mike Kafka.
Barkley is expected to have a bounce-back year in 2022, as he’ll surely be featured in the aerial attack. Getting Barkley the ball in open space and letting him do his thing is something former offensive coordinator Jason Garrett didn’t focus on. The same won’t be said for Kafka, which has people intrigued about what Barkley will be able to do this campaign. In order for the Giants to even sniff the postseason, they’ll need Barkley to be at his best. Trade him? No chance.
