NY Giants general manager Joe Schoen has been busy, making some last-minute decisions leading up to training camp. First, Schoen went out and signed veteran safety Andrew Adams to help out the depth at the position. He’s now done more of the same, but with his focus shifting to the defensive line.

According to NFL insider Mike Garafolo, the Giants have agreed to terms with former Detroit Lions starting defensive tackle Nick Williams. Williams is a massive presence, as he checks in at 6-4, 310 pounds. Williams started every game for the Lions last year. Now, he’s inking with NY, his fifth team in the NFL.

NY Giants signing Nick Williams is a late win for the team

Williams has previously suited up for the Chiefs, Dolphins, Bears and most recently the Lions. In the past two seasons, Williams started 30 games for Detroit, including every contest in 2021. Last season, the newest Giant posted 27 tackles, 0.5 sacks and one pass deflection. Williams has loads of experience, which you can never have enough of up front.

The signing of Williams is bad news for rookie defensive lineman Jabari Ellis, however, as the team waived him in the process. Ellis went undrafted coming out of South Carolina, but was hoping to make noise at camp for the Giants to try and make it onto the 53-man roster. Now, Ellis is going to have to look for a shot elsewhere.

With the Giants still having a little bit of cap space left over, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Schoen make another move or two this week. After signing Adams and Williams, we could see the G-Men bring in a tight end as well. It was reported that the Giants worked out former first-round pick Eric Ebron, though a signing hasn’t been completed just yet. Fourth-round pick Daniel Bellinger is currently deal with a quad injury, which could lead to a TE coming in.

With the first preseason game against the Patriots getting closer and closer for Big Blue, Schoen is putting the finishing touches on loading up the roster to increase the competition the rest of the way this summer. A veteran cornerback would of course be a welcome addition for the defense. Fans will want to pay close attention to something going down there as well, as that spot definitely needs some extra bodies.
