No, this doesn’t make the same kind of splash as landing a Jerry Jeudy or a Brandin Cooks would. But you know what, we’ll take it. On Wednesday, the NY Giants added wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins to the mix of things, claiming him off waivers from the Buffalo Bills. This is yet another player that Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll are quite familiar with.
Hodgins stats aren’t impressive, we can start off by saying that. In his two years in the pros, he’s appeared in three total games. After not recording a catch in 2021, he hauled in four balls for 41 yards in two games this fall for the Bills. Again, that’s nothing to phone home about.
However, Hodgins has fantastic size, checking in at 6-4, 210 pounds. This offense is in desperate need of a playmaker on the outside for Daniel Jones. Hodgins won’t be relied on to arrive in East Rutherford and become the next Davante Adams, but with all the injuries and the lack of consistency from the WR unit, this kid has a chance to make some noise.
NY Giants claim Isaiah Hodgins off waivers and the move could pay off
The fact of the matter here is that the Giants don’t have a ton of cap space and their main WR trade targets were deemed too expensive ahead of the deadline. Adding someone like Hodgins is a low-risk move. If he ends up exceeding expectations and being a reliable weapon for Daniel Jones, then everyone wins.
If he doesn’t pull his weight and records some drops during practice or a game he’s featured in, then Schoen can simply pull the plug. As things stand, the main available weapons for Jones is a unit that includes Marcus Johnson, David Sills, Kenny Golladay and Wan’Dale Robinson. Richie James is dealing with a concussion, and his two fumbles vs. Seattle is still fresh on a lot of minds.
With Daniel Bellinger also sidelined due to his fractured eye socket, Jones and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka need all the help they can get. Hodgins, a 2020 sixth-round pick, was a standout for Oregon State in college and he’s been waiting for the right opportunity to shine at the next level. Who knows, maybe this move to Big Blue is just what the doctor ordered.
Joe Schoen leaves the door open for NY Giants to sign Odell Beckham Jr.
NY Giants general manager Joe Schoen said he'd consider the team signing free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and fans are pumped.
