Shortly after the trade deadline, NY Giants general manager Joe Schoen said he received a call about the availability of a star player. In nice fashion, Schoen essentially told the unknown team to take a hike. Just about everyone, including us, figured it was someone eyeing a move for star running back Saquon Barkley.

That wasn’t the case after all, which Schoen confirmed. However, when asked if the trade call was for stud defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence, Schoen neither confirmed nor denied it was the case.

From our chair, it really feels like Schoen was hinting that Lawrence indeed was the playmaker drawing interest. There was simply no way Schoen was going to send him to a new team, as Lawrence is in the middle of an amazing campaign for the G-Men.

NY Giants receiving trade interest on Dexter Lawrence isn’t surprising

Come on, did you really think Schoen was going to part ways with one of the biggest pieces of Wink Martindale’s defense? Nope. Not only did Schoen quickly turn down the advances for Lawrence, but he also made it seem like a handsome new deal could be coming soon for No. 97 as well.

Lawrence has certainly played his way to an extension, as he’s leading the team with his four sacks. With so many injuries up front for this defense, including Kayvon Thibodeaux, Leonard Williams and Azeez Ojulari missing multiple games, Lawrence has been a consistent animal in the trenches for Martindale and head man Brian Daboll.

With Lawrence having a career year, he’s going to want a pay raise in the near future. It’d be wise for Schoen to make something happen sooner than later, as the man known as ‘Sexy Dexy’ is playing at a Pro Bowl level and he’s won over countless hearts in East Rutherford.

Schoen was obviously wise to not trade him, and soon enough, he’ll be even smarter in putting a long-term contract on the table.
