In the middle of a sensational season, NY Giants running back Saquon Barkley continues to show why he’s deserving of a monster new contract. However, it’s totally up in the air if the G-Men will be the ones to give him said contract or not.

General manager Joe Schoen and Barkley were working on a possible extension during the bye week. Per Adam Schefter, though, the two sides weren’t able to come to an agreement. Now, Schefter is also reporting that the Giants and Barkley have decided to ‘table’ those extension discussions until the offseason. That’s not good.

NY Giants and Saquon Barkley will put off contract talks until the offseason

"“Neither side wants contract-related distractions as they attempt to build upon a feel-good season in which the Giants are in the thick of NFC playoff contention while Barkley is a candidate for, at the very least, the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award,” Schefter wrote on the situation.”"

On one side of things, it’s refreshing to know that Schoen and Barkley are on the same page in terms of them not wanting any sort of a distraction in the middle of NY’s fantastic campaign. They’d rather really get the negotiations going when this team isn’t worried about winning games.

However, fans were hoping to see things get resolved pretty darn quickly during the bye week. That felt like a longshot, but the hope was still there for everyone who wants to see Barkley be a Giant for the rest of his career. The idea of him playing for a different team doesn’t sit well with anyone.

At the end of the day, though, No. 26 is looking like one of the best running backs in the game right now and he’s going to want top dollar. The franchise tag is there for the Giants to use it on Barkley, but they might want to save that for Daniel Jones. Schoen and the rest of the front office really have a tough decision to make soon.

With Barkley potentially hitting free agency this offseason, you know teams will be lining up to try and sign him. A healthy Barkley is a serious, serious problem for opposing defenses. Schoen must make him happy this offseason, otherwise he’ll surely be ready to make brilliant plays for a different organization. No one wants to see that, but it feels like the door is opening a bit more for that to happen.
