Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes are going to have to send NY Giants head coach Brian Daboll a case of beer and some cookies if Mike Kafka ends up taking the Arizona Cardinals job. The two Chiefs have been singing Kafka’s praises, really doing their best to make sure their old pal and coach gets a shot at running his own show with the Cardinals.

You see, that could turn out to be a problem for Daboll, as he doesn’t want to lose his offensive coordinator – though you know he’d be proud of his assistant for taking this kind of leap.

If the Cardinals front office takes what Mahomes said about Kafka into account, then they’d be wise to put an offer on the table.

Patrick Mahomes is rooting for Mike Kafka to become the next Cardinals head coach

"“Coach Kafka is a special person and a special coach,” Mahomes said via Jake Anderson of Arizona Sports. “When he first got here he was quality control — that was my first year as a rookie so I spent a lot of time with Coach Kafka where he was teaching me the playbook and teaching me how to be a quarterback in the NFL.“That continued for a long time and when he left, I knew he was going to be a head coach soon. I know he’s down (here) in Arizona, so if he gets hired there he’ll get that place turned around. He’s a great coach and a great person as well, so I’m excited for him.”"

As you can see from that quote from Mahomes, he’s a big fan of Kafka and he’s appreciative of what he was able to get done while he was working on Reid’s staff. Kafka was with Kansas City from 2017-2021, starting off as a quality control coach, then moving his way up to quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator.

His time in KC led to Daboll giving Kafka a shot as offensive coordinator and he impressed quite a bit in 2022 helping Daniel Jones develop as a signal-caller. Now, the Cardinals, if they decide to hire Kafka, are hoping he can have the same kind of impact working with Kyler Murray.

It’s only a matter of time before Arizona announces who its next head coach will be, but Kafka is getting a serious look for the job. If he lands it, he’ll have to give Reid and Mahomes a big hug. It’ll be bittersweet for Daboll, but he’ll surely have plenty of candidates in mind as a potential replacement.
