Joe Schoen already hard at work by re-signing NY Giants tight end to new deal

This may not be a blockbuster move and it surely doesn’t have the same excitement of a Daniel Jones or Saquon Barkley deal, but Joe Schoen has gotten his busy offseason started. On Monday, the NY Giants announced that the team has agreed to terms with young tight end Lawrence Cager. Just like that, the 6-5, 220-pounder will be back next campaign.

Cager was set to become an exclusive rights free agent, but Schoen and the rest of the front office have clearly been intrigued by his abilities. Cager is more known for his pass-catching abilities and he recorded some nice grabs for NY this past season. More of the same will be on the way in 2023.

Cager wasn’t a superstar player by any means, but he stepped up and got the job done for head coach Brian Daboll whenever his No. 83 was called. During the regular season, Cager appeared in six games for Big Blue, hauling in 13 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown. Then in the playoffs, he caught two balls for 20 yards from Daniel Jones.

A stud out of Georgia, Cager went undrafted but then made his way to East Rutherford in 2020 – but to play for the New York Jets. He appeared in two games for the Jets that fall and then signed with the Browns in 2021. He played in one game for Cleveland.

Then this past season, Cajer played in one game for the Jets, but was signed to the Giants practice squad in October. He made his way to the active roster and turned heads in his limited action. In the regular-season finale vs. the Eagles, with NY playing basically all backups, Cager looked sharp.

We’ll see what he’ll be able to get done with the G-Men moving forward. As for Schoen, this obviously is the first of many moves he’ll need to make in the coming months. Once free agency hits, Giants fans would love to see him add some playmakers for Jones.

Then in the draft, you already know plenty of young talent on both sides of the ball will be making their way to NY.
