The wait is finally over. After months of training camp speculation, roster battles, and preseason action, the New York Giants are about to put on the pads for a real football game. John Harbaugh's regular season Giants debut will come on Sunday Night Football against the Dallas Cowboys.
Both teams have shifted their rosters and coaching staffs this offseason in hopes of returning to the playoffs. While the season opener won't determine either team's fate this year, it will be a crucial first test.

Giants' opener against Cowboys will come down to these 4 matchups
CB Paulson Adebo vs. WR George Pickens
Pickens had a career year in 2025. Playing on the franchise tag this season, he'll need to show that his breakout campaign wasn't a one-year blip. Adebo and the Giants' outside cornerbacks will be tasked with slowing him down.
Adebo has the size to hold up against Pickens, but his ability to deny explosive plays will be tested. Dak Prescott isn't afraid to give his receivers a chance against tight coverage. A couple of deep passes to Pickens could quickly sway the game.
Giants DT DJ Reader vs. Cowboys LG Tyler Booker
Big Blue focused on fixing its run defense this offseason. Now, it's time to prove that those moves made a difference. The Cowboys had one of the NFL's top ten rushing attacks last season, so they'll likely look to test New York's ability to stop them on the ground.
Reader will be the key to making that happen. He may not make many tackles, but he'll need to plug holes on the interior and create opportunities for linebackers Tremaine Edmunds and Arvell Reese. If he's not up to the task, this game could get out of hand quickly.
Giants QB Jaxson Dart vs. Cowboys DC Christian Parker
All offseason, a fuss has been made about new Dallas defensive coordinator Christian Parker. He's viewed as one of the brightest young minds in the league and the potential answer to the Cowboys' shaky 2025 defense. While he comes from the Vic Fangio world characterized by relatively simple coverages, he is expected to disguise his looks before the snap.
Dart's ability to diagnose coverages and make his throws on time will be crucial in determining the outcome of this matchup. He can't afford to let Parker's pre-snap disguises trick him into making mistakes. The second-year QB will need to play within the rhythm of Matt Nagy's scheme to keep the offense on track.
Giants RG Francis Mauigoa vs. Cowboys DT Quinnen Williams
Mauigoa has been impressive throughout the preseason, but he hasn't had to line up against the best defensive tackles in the league. Williams is the centerpiece of the Cowboys' defense and is capable of wrecking the game on his own.
Hopefully, Nagy and Dart limit Mauigoa's one-on-one reps against Williams. Still, the rookie guard will have to be at his best to keep the former All-Pro from shifting the game.
