4 NY Giants who are quickly playing their way off the roster
By Mike Luciano
The NY Giants have limped to the halfway point of the season, as the team's 2-8 record has been made even more disappointing by the fact that quarterback Daniel Jones and head coach Brian Daboll continue to show they are not quite cut out for their respective roles.
The failure of this season has been a collaborative effort. Players on both sides of the ball have been rank to kick off 2024, and it doesn't seem like immediate improvements are coming anytime soon.
These four players stand out as the most objectionable underperformers on the roster right now. By the end of the year, it should surprise no one if they end up completely devoid of any playing time or completely off the roster altogether.
4 NY Giants who are quickly playing their way off the roster
4. WR Jalin Hyatt
Those who had concerns about Hyatt coming out of college at Tennessee have been proven eminently correct. Hyatt struggles to run routes other than deep balls, which has led to a very minimal usage rate and just one catch all season long.
The Giants, who have a limited vertical passing game thanks to Jones' limitations, will find it tough to get anything going with Hyatt barring a huge philosophy change.
3. RB Eric Gray
Gray was a whirling dervish at Oklahoma, making him an absolute steal in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Despite being handed a golden opportunity for more playing time in a bad Giants backfield, Gray has let Tyrone Tracy steal his spotlight entirely.
Gray had just 12 carries for 22 yards this season, showing a severe lack of juice in the running game. Tracy may be the superior talent, which could make it tough for Gray to climb out of the doghouse.
2. OT Joshua Ezeudu
With New York's offensive line banged up a bit, Ezeudu was thrust back into the spotlight. It took all of one game against the Philadelphia Eagles to remind everyone why the former third-round pick is not thought of very highly, as Jones was walloped by the Philly line while Ezeudu did his best turnstile impression.
With two sacks allowed already and a terrible run blocking grade, Ezeudu is on thin ice.
1. CB Deonte Banks
Banks' play has been disappointing this season, but not awful. However, the big issue with 2023's first-round pick has been his lack of effort. Between outright refusing to make a play on a Jalen Hurts run and getting in similar trouble against the Steelers, Banks is not held in high regard right now.
As long as he keeps showing some fight, the Giants will continue to work with this extremely talented player. However, things could easily go sideways if he keeps showing a lack of fight.
