NY Giants head coach Brian Daboll is having a rough go in year three. As the saying goes, "You are what your record says you are." Well, then G-Men are 2-7 this season... so we'll go out on a limb and suggest he's not doing great.
It’s an unfortunate twist for Daboll. After a strong first season that took the team to the playoffs (which even included a win over the Minnesota Vikings), things have taken a sharp downturn.
Once seen as Daniel Jones’ potential savior, Daboll hasn’t been able to replicate that early success - a troubling sign. Ideally, a coach’s impact grows over time as players get comfortable in the system and the team is built to fit his vision. But that hasn’t been the case here.
Though Giants owner John Mara told the media he has no plans to part ways with Daboll after this season, the writing could still be on the wall. It wouldn’t be the first time Mara’s public statements didn’t fully reflect his plans for a head coach’s future. If the Giants do decide to pivot, though, they’ll likely have to cross one of their top candidates off the list.
Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson likely isn’t eyeing NY Giants head coaching job
Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has become a popular name for just about every NFL team searching for a head coach. It's not surprising the 38-year-old is a hot commodity. He's posted a top-five offense all three seasons he's been with the Lions.
He’s transformed Jared Goff into a legitimate MVP candidate, a remarkable turnaround for a quarterback once seen as an outcast with the Los Angeles Rams.
If anyone has the inside scoop on future NFL head coaching moves, it’s ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter. On Get Up this morning, Schefter shared insights into which teams Ben Johnson might consider if he decides to leave the Lions for a head coaching job this offseason.
Much to the chagrin of Giants fans clamoring for change, it does not look like Johnson has any interest in joining Big Blue. Schefter stated, "Johnson is going to be very, very selective about the place he chooses to go to - if he decides even to leave Detroit."
Schefter also noted he’s unsure if Johnson even wants to leave the NFC North. With up to eight teams potentially looking for new head coaches this offseason, competition for Johnson’s attention could be even tougher. It's rumored he was eyeing the Chicago Bears' opening last season, but obviously nothing transpired.
Regardless of whether or not Johnson has a current interest in the Giants, if Daboll is no longer the coach, Mara should pick up the phone and do everything he can to convince him to head to NY. However, it sure sounds like he doesn't have much interest in that right now.
