John Mara backing Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen doesn't mean anything in October
Trust the process? We hate to steal a Philadelphia slogan, but this is what NY Giants co-owner John Mara is preaching to the fanbase despite things being a mess in 2024. Following the Week 7 loss to the Eagles, the G-Men are 2-5 and the campaign feels lost.
This has come after the Giants went 6-11 and missed the postseason in 2023. Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen reached the postseason in Year 1 in '22, but nothing has gone right for them since then. Things have been so bad this fall, plenty of people have been calling for both of them to be fired.
That's not going to happen, as Mara told reporters on Wednesday night that the organization has no plans to make a change at GM or head coach either during the campaign or this offseason. So, Coach Dabes and Schoen BOTH appear to be safe. However, as Dan Duggan pointed out, the Giants have publicly supported coaches before, only for a major change to arrive not too long after:
John Mara has no plans to fire Brian Daboll or Joe Schoen this offseason
Duggan makes a good point. It's one thing for Mara to give his guys a vote of confidence in October, but what if things continue to get even worse over the next 10 games? Do we really think if the Giants go on to lose 10 consecutive contests, Daboll or Schoen won't be in trouble?
Yes, Mara doesn't want to pull the plug too soon like the organization has in the past, but a lot can change before the season ends in January. Schoen's 2024 NFL Draft class is looking strong, but other than that, he's had plenty of misses in other drafts (cough cough Evan Neal), while some free agency decisions have backfired.
We could probably write another 400-500 words on the whole Saquon Barkley saga, which came back to bite Schoen in the rear with Saquon signing with the Eagles and then rushing for 176 yards and a touchdown against NY at MetLife Stadium. Oh, and that came in a 28-3 Philly win.
As for Daboll, there have been some questionable calls this year that have infuriated the fanbase. His bone-headed decision in Week 2 to not have a Graham Gano backup plan cost him a win at Washington. Trotting out Joshua Ezeudu to be his left tackle? That's on him and Schoen for being unprepared for life without Andrew Thomas once again.
This is Year 3 for Schoen and Daboll and progress isn't being showcased. Mara is standing by both of them, but we'd love to get his thoughts on them once the campaign wraps up. He might be speaking in a different tone.
