While the New York Giants are focused on getting ready for training camp, the Washington Commanders are watching an unfathomable saga unfold between quarterback Jayden Daniels and current 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.
For most of the offseason, it has been assumed that Aiyuk would eventually land with the Commanders, either through free agency or a trade. But after a series of social media posts, the star wideout is already raising questions about whether he'll play at all in 2026.
For the Giants, this is a win-win situation. Either New York's NFC East rival takes on a never-ending distraction, or they enter the season with one of the weakest wide receiver groups in the NFL. No matter how this saga ends, Big Blue comes out on top.
Giants can only laugh as Commanders deal with Brandon Aiyuk-Jayden Daniels drama
Let's get this out of the way: Aiyuk is still on the 49ers' roster. In fact, his current contract runs through the 2028 season. That being said, he hasn't been around the team facility in months, and the team has done everything but release the receiver in an attempt to separate itself from the situation.
What was once a lingering question of how Aiyuk would end up on Washington's roster has now become a question of whether the receiver will play football in 2026 (or ever again). After Daniels' Instagram post saying "Enjoy retirement pal," Aiyuk's chances of joining the Commanders seem to have vanished.
The Giants have some receiver-related questions of their own. Malik Nabers is still recovering from the knee injury that ended his 2025 season, and the pass-catcher pecking order still isn't established. But they're at least dealing with football-related questions. There aren't any ongoing locker room arguments drawing attention away from what the team is trying to accomplish this season.
However the Aiyuk saga ends, it's good news for the Giants. While it seems improbable, the Commanders may still acquire the disgruntled wideout. If they do, they're bringing in a receiver who hasn't played football in almost two years. As good as he was earlier in his career, there's no guarantee that the receiver can still be a solid contributor.
If the Commanders don't add Aiyuk, they'll enter the 2026 season with an alarmingly thin group of receivers. Behind Terry McLaurin, who is likely past his prime, Washington doesn't have any proven pass catchers on its roster.
Either way, the Giants have an early advantage over their division rival.
