Brian Daboll has nobody but himself to blame for the Giants' left tackle issues
Einstein defined the word insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. The NY Giants continue to do that by trotting Josh Ezeudu out onto the field to play left tackle.
They expect Ezeudu to step up and be their swing tackle, but if you turn on the film, you'll see that he just is not cut out for it. The fault here lies with nobody else but head coach Brian Daboll. It's his call to keep playing Ezeudu, and it looks like he's going to get the start once again against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
So, why is Daboll sticking with the third-year lineman? With some free agent linemen available, the Giants need to be proactive instead of reactive. Veteran tackles like David Bakhtiari, DJ Humphries, or even a Charles Leno-type are available. The Giants brought Humphries in for a visit, but it remains to be seen if he'll be signed or not.
Brian Daboll continuing to trust Josh Ezeudu at LT is a massive mistake
Even after the injury to Andrew Thomas, instead of signing someone to help out, Daboll decided to turn to Ezeudu vs. the Eagles, and he has failed just about every time he has stepped on the field. Again, we knew the outcome of how it was going to go, so why keep putting him out there?
Another option is of course to give former No. 7 overall pick Evan Neal a shot. For as much as the Giants keep trying to put Ezeudu out there at tackle, they seem to have almost given up on Neal. He seems like nothing more than an afterthought at this point. Joe Schoen and Daboll don't want to admit the Giants missed on Neal, but if you can't turn to him in this situation, you clearly missed on that Top 10 pick.
New York will continue to try Ezeudu, who came into the league as a guard, as a tackle, but they won't try Neal, who was a stud left tackle at Alabama and made the switch to right tackle for the G-Men. Neal played left tackle for Alabama and was one of the best in college during his final year in the SEC. If they didn't want to try Neal at the left tackle spot, then maybe try and give him some reps at right tackle and move Jermaine Eluemenor to the left side of things - Eluemenor can play on the left in a pinch, but NY isn't ready to take that chance.
All in all, NY came into the year with a terrible backup plan for Thomas and now that he's out for the season, we're seeing how unprepared Schoen and Daboll were. We can be angry with Ezeudu all we want for his rough play, but it's not his fault he's being thrown into the fire like this - it's Daboll's.
