The loss of Andrew Thomas is proving to be even worse than people could have ever imagined for the NY Giants. Thomas, an All-Pro talent, was the straw that stirs the drink for the offensive line, but he's out for the rest of the year with a foot injury.
Joshua Ezeudu, who has no business playing on the outside, got the start at left tackle for the Giants vs. the Eagles and things were a nightmare. The G-Men and Brian Daboll are still refusing to move Jermaine Eluemunor to LT and give Evan Neal a shot again at right tackle.
So, what does Joe Schoen have in mind to help the group up front? According to Adam Schefter, Schoen is bringing in former first-round pick D.J. Humphries for a visit in East Rutherford. Should a signing go down, it'd only be a matter of time before he grabs a starting spot, right? Well, there's a serious knee injury to worry about:
The NY Giants are hosting veteran OT D.J. Humphries for a visit
It's unknown at this time if the veteran OT is even going to sign with the Giants, but what kind of message does this send? Schoen is essentially admitting defeat on his Evan Neal pick, which will go down as one of the worst first-round selections in team history.
No disrespect to Humphries, but he suffered a torn ACL late last season and was released in March. There's a reason he's still unsigned, as teams surely aren't feeling too confident about that injured knee of his. Will this end up being another 'from the couch to the field' situation for the Giants?
Schoen's failures for the offensive line have been well documented. The fact that he and Brian Daboll came into the season with the same backup plan for Thomas is a joke. Now, they want to potentially put a band-aid on things by signing someone who is still working their way back from an ACL issue?
There aren't many options out in free agency for the Giants to take a look at, but come on, signing Humphries (if it happens) is not the kind of move the team needs to be making. We know Ezeudu isn't the answer at LT, but throwing in the towel on Neal like this already feels like yet another blunder from Schoen. The Giants continue to infuriate the fanbase with head-scratching decisions on and off the field.
