Brian Daboll’s over-the-top outburst triggers costly mess for Giants

Respect the tent.

If you do the crime, you do the time. Or if you’re the New York Giants, you pay the fine — and face some public humiliation along the way.

It all stems from a moment in Big Blue's Week 6 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart had just taken a pretty big shot from Philly linebacker Patrick Johnson and jogged straight into the blue medical tent to be evaluated for a concussion. Head coach Brian Daboll, visibly frustrated, lost his marbles on the sideline. He stuck his head inside the tent — which is very much not allowed — and then ripped into team doctor Scott Rodeo on the sideline.

It was a sideline meltdown of epic proportions from Dabs that ended up costing him, the team, and even rookie running back Cam Skattebo some serious cash. Now we’ve got the final word: the G-Men were fined $200,000, Daboll was hit with a $100,000 fine of his own, and Skattebo — who also entered the tent — was fined $15,000.

Giants slapped with $315K in fines after Jaxson Dart concussion scare

The NFL and NFLPA said in a joint statement that even though neither Daboll nor Skattebo physically disrupted the exam, “their conduct was inconsistent with and demonstrated a disregard for the concussion protocol’s requirements.”

It’s a bad look for a league that’s gone out of its way to tighten the protocol. Coaches aren’t supposed to influence anything. That tent is sacred ground for a reason, and player safety has to come first, especially when we’re talking about a rookie phenom with real franchise cornerstone upside.

Daboll owned it after the game, apologized to Dr. Rodeo, and insisted it wouldn't happen again. And to be fair, this wasn’t a case of trying to force Dart back onto the field. It was a high-stress moment, and emotions spilled over. But the league doesn’t really care about context when it comes to player safety.

Skatt was asked about the punishment, to which he gave "no comment," but was just happy his buddy is happy and healthy:

The Giants came away with a massive win and a minor fine — but the league clearly wasn’t thrilled with how it all played out. Hopefully, Dart won’t give them another reason to poke their heads in the medical tent. For their wallets’ sake, let’s hope they’ve learned their lesson.

The G-Men head down I-95 for a rematch with the Eagles in Week 8, hoping the result — minus the concussion scare and fines — looks a lot like it did two weeks ago.
