Cam Skattebo might’ve just triggered an early Giants trade decision

The leaves are turning, the nights are crisp — it’s mid-October, which can only mean one thing: Trade SZN is here. As Week 6 wraps up, teams are pretty in touch with where they stand and what they need. They’ve had a decent sample size to learn the ins and outs of the roster, painting a clearer picture as to who may or may not be on the move.

The New York Giants are in an interesting situation as they head toward November 4’s trade deadline. They’re now winners of two of their last three games — against the Los Angeles Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles, no less — all with rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart under center. Three of their four losses are respectable, but still, it’s hard to place the 2-4 G-Men when it comes to the moves they will or won’t make.

Either way, fans will be anxiously awaiting what general manager Joe Schoen has in store for the team, but one thing is becoming apparent — rookie running back Cam Skattebo is running Devin Singletary out of a roster spot. ESPN’s Adam Schefter all but confirmed it in his recent pre-trade deadline column.

Cam Skattebo’s breakout could force Devin Singletary to the trade block

Singletary’s role is evaporating right before his very eyes. Through six weeks, the 28-year-old has 24 carries for 82 yards, along with two receptions for zero yards. To say he’s been ineffective would be an understatement.

Fortunately, the Giants already have an answer for the lack of production. His name is Cam Skattebo.

The 23-year-old fourth-round pick has seen an uptick in usage over the past couple of weeks. In three of the past four games, he’s eclipsed 100 scrimmage yards, scoring four of his five touchdowns on the season. In total, Skatt has carried the ball 82 times for 338 yards and five touchdowns, along with 20 receptions for 155 yards.

Additionally, Big Blue has second-year back Tyrone Tracy Jr. to aid in the former Arizona State standout’s breakout. He’s more of an asset in the passing game than Skattebo, but make no mistake about it, this duo has the makings of being the next great pairing in East Rutherford (did someone say Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw).

It’s hard to say what Schoen could actually get in return from a Singletary trade. His year-plus in New York has all but tanked any value he once had. Still, the seven-year back could be the perfect salary to include in a blockbuster trade — say, for a wide receiver. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported the Giants were sniffing around the market for a wide receiver upgrade.

Most 2-4 teams likely wouldn’t be looking at acquisitions, but the G-Men are in a unique spot. If head coach Brian Daboll wants to get the best out of Dart, making a move before the deadline might be necessary. Either way, it’s obvious Skattebo’s electric breakout is pushing Devin Singletary to the edge.
