It’s been a while since New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo was running through defenders, but I guess that’s life when you’re coming back from a broken fibula, a dislocated ankle, and a torn deltoid ligament all at once.
The 24-year-old has spent the offseason checking off rehab milestones, pacing his program to ensure he's on the field when Dallas visits MetLife Stadium for Week 1. But while Skatt's "I'll be ready for Week 1" comments at the Giants' town hall injected some much-needed hope into the fan base, the electricity of the event might've gotten the best of him.
Chris Simms ain't buying what he's selling -- and it’s a brutal reality check Giants fans won't want to hear.
The Pro Football Talk co-host practically claimed public enemy No. 1 status in New York with his thoughts on Skattebo's update. While fans took the running back's words at face value, Simms read between the lines, subsequently raining all over Big Blue's parade:
“When he says, ‘I’m a little ways out,’ that makes me think it’ll be dicey for Week 1. And I don’t think he’s going to be 100 percent himself during Week 1."
To quote the great Michael Scott, "I send it back."
Chris Simms throws cold water on Cam Skattebo’s return timeline in the worst way
To really understand why Simms’ words stink on ice so badly, you have to look back to Week 8.
That was the exact moment Skattebo’s electric rookie season came crashing down in a season-ending matter of seconds, trading highlight-reel stiff-arms for a grueling rehab schedule.
Fast forward to today, and the reality is that he’s still only jogging. With training camp just over two months away, that’s a relatively tight window for a guy who needs to prove he can still sprint, cut, accelerate, and take a hit.
But hey, if you listen to the human-sized Plinko ball himself, the math always works in his favor. This is, after all, the same guy who declared he was going for 2,000 rushing yards this year: "I had 400 yards on 100 carries. When I play 17-plus games this year, it's going to be 300 carries for over 2,000 yards." Well, that math's not mathing. Four yards per carry over 300 carries is 1,200 yards -- so he's off by just a couple... hundred. Math is hard.
If we apply that same "Skatt math" to his recovery timeline, his ankle should be as good as new tomorrow.
Back in the un-fun real world, though, there's a chance Simms might actually be onto something.
If he's right and that ankle isn't close to 100 percent, Giants fans are staring down a nightmare scenario. Instead of a thrilling Week 1 return to pummel the Cowboys, Big Blue might start the year with their fan favorite back glued to the sideline, or not operating at full capacity. Either way, it leaves a major void in the backfield before the season even starts.
