Oh, Colin Cowherd. We meet again.
It feels like just yesterday Colin Cowherd went on-air to -- for lack of a better term -- air his grievances about the Giants firing Brian Daboll. If memory serves, the polarizing media personality called the move ‘idiotic’ and said they should’ve waited until the end of the season to make a decision. That aged like milk.
There was also his bizarre obsession with trading Big Blue’s star rookie quarterback, Jaxson Dart, for Indiana’s Heisman winner, Fernando Mendoza, if the Giants landed the No. 1 pick. As if that wasn’t bonkers enough, he also not-so-semi-jokingly claimed Marcus Freeman returned to Notre Dame because the Giants lost control of the pick, meaning Dart would likely stay under center, and the Mendoza dream was dead.
Talk about a whirlwind of emotions. The thing with Cowherd is his chronic lack of conviction and obsessive need to stay center stage... hence, all the whiplash. But what if I told you that same flip-flopping just painted the Giants in a surprisingly warm light? On a recent episode of his show, Cowherd shelved the negativity and tossed a glowing endorsement Big Blue’s way.
Colin Cowherd offers surprising praise for Giants and Kevin Stefanski pairing
Big Blue is in the middle of its most important head coaching search in recent memory, and a few names have started to separate from the pack. Former Ravens head coach John Harbaugh is widely considered the favorite, but former Browns HC Kevin Stefanski might be closer than people think. If not neck and neck.
Well, it seems as though Cowherd has completely forgotten his anti-Giants takes from just a couple weeks ago -- something he’s become impressively convenient at -- and pulled a 180 in real time. On Tuesday’s episode of The Herd, he turned into the Giants’ biggest hype man, explaining why East Rutherford would be the perfect landing spot for Stefanski:
"The New York Giants have several key components... When you have a #1 receiver, a #1 left tackle, a #1 back, a #1 quarterback, an excellent pass rusher, the #5 pick... that's pretty solid."
Well, well, well. How the turn tables... Quite the interesting stance from the one held a whole not-even-a-month ago. How quickly we move on from "Dart needs to be traded" to "they have a No. 1 QB."
It's all about fitting that agenda, am I right?
In all seriousness, spot the lie. He's not wrong. Stefanski is a brilliant offensive mind who would be walking into one of the best, if not the best, head coaching gigs of this cycle, headlined by Dart, Andrew Thomas, Malik Nabers, and Cam Skattebo on offense. That's a lot of juice for the 43-year-old to work with.
Whether Stefanski ends up being the guy or not, it's clear that even some of the harshest critics (**cough, Colin, cough**) are finally coming around on this Giants team.
I'm not going to start throwing around "this team is a coach away" just yet -- we've seen how that's shaken out before -- but it does feel like they're moving in the right direction, which is about the best compliment they can get right now.
