I can't believe the words that are about to come out of my mouth -- er, fingers (?), but Dexter Lawrence's time with the New York Giants is officially over. Mark Saturday as one of the worst days in franchise history.

According to NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, the Giants agreed to send the two-time Second-Team All-Pro (and three-time Pro Bowler) to the Cincinnati Bengals for the 10th overall pick in the 2026 Draft:

Lawrence has been with the G-Men for the past seven years, serving as the team's best player for most, if not all, of them. New York selected the 6-foot-4, 340-pound defensive lineman 17th overall out of Clemson to anchor their defensive line for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, "foreseeable" ended a bit more prematurely than any Giants fan would have liked.

Giants close the book on Dexter Lawrence with shocking trade to Bengals

What started as a (from the outside) financially driven trade request has officially turned into the worst-case scenario.

What actually happened behind closed doors will likely never be revealed, but it’s safe to say things didn’t exactly go smoothly. Lawrence was clearly frustrated with his contract, especially the lack of guaranteed money over the final two years, and the team wasn’t willing to meet in the middle, resulting in... this.

When he signed his four-year, $90 million deal in 2024, he was the third-highest-paid defensive tackle, but fast forward two years, and he’s now tied for 11th.

However, it might not be all about the money. Supposedly, the two sides had been at an impasse for the past couple of days, with talks even being reported as completely broken off. This has to run much deeper than dollars and cents. But now, he's Cincy's problem.

While the trade is absolutely bonkers, getting the 10th overall pick from the Bengals is far from a bad return. If anything, this might be a total L.L. Bean fleece job by the G-Men. Big Dex is coming off a terrible 2025 season, following a 2024 season that ended in a season-ending elbow injury.

By not giving in to his demands, they just saved a ton of short-term and long-term money while getting a pick that will help transform the new iteration of the Giants moving forward. A steep price to pay, for sure, but one that now feels necessary.

We’ll see how the rest of the team responds, but as return packages go, it’s tough to be upset with this.
