Well, the fun, awesome offseason vibes of the New York Giants didn’t last very long.

Just as things were starting to feel somewhat optimistic under new head coach John Harbaugh, with a new coaching staff and an upgraded roster, everything just got smashed to pieces with a sledgehammer. As is the life of a Giants fan.

According to Adam Schefter, All-Pro defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence has requested a trade and will not be participating in the team’s offseason program as contract talks continue to go nowhere:

I'm not losing complete control. You are.

He still has two years left on his deal and is set to make $20 million this season, but after two offseasons of stalled negotiations, that hasn’t been enough to keep things moving, and the 28-year-old has taken talks into his own hands. And that truly couldn't be worse for Giants fans. I feel like I need to throw up.

Dexter Lawrence trade request changes literally everything for Giants

There’s no way to spin this into anything positive. Lawrence isn’t just another good player looking for more money. He is the defense. Everything runs through him, literally. He eats double teams constantly, and cleans up so much on the defense that goes unnoticed. He doesn't get much recognition for it, either, which has to be infuriating.

He's been the lone bright spot on a team that's been irrelevant for years.

But let's talk return. No team is giving up equal value for a player like Sexy Dexy. I'm talking about one of the most impactful interior defenders in football over the last few years. Even a strong package of picks doesn’t replace a player like that, at least not instantly. Quinnen Williams got the Jets a second and a first, so that feels like the starting point.

The timing doesn’t help at all. Harbaugh is opening his first offseason program on Tuesday with a 6-foot-4, 340-pound-sized cloud over his head, and instead of starting the offseason program off strong, the thing on everyone's mind is going to be what happens next with Lawrence.

They literally just said earlier this offseason that they want the three-time Pro Bowler to stay in North Jersey -- they consider him "untouchable." Now, it's put your money where your mouth is time.

There’s still time for this to get worked out. Extensions don’t take long when both sides want the same thing. But right now, this is absolutely catastrophic. There's no other way to say it. If he actually wants to get traded, then this is the worst-case scenario. Full stop.
