Dominic Zvada-matic tracker: Giants’ rookie scoring record after Week 6 reboot

Where my history buffs at?!

After watching New York Giants rookie kicker Dominic Zvada miss three field goals against the Washington Commanders in Week 5, I was starting to wonder whether my weekly obsession with his pursuit of franchise scoring history had finally jinxed the kid.

Four weeks without missing a single kick, one article too many, and suddenly Zvada-matic needed a visit from the Geek Squad because up until then, he was a robot. Fortunately, whatever they did worked, because the 22-year-old (who is confirmed a human) was back to his old ways in Week 6.

Zvada bounced back with a perfect afternoon in Sunday’s 34-27 wacky loss to the New Orleans Saints, connecting from 34 and 41 yards while making his only extra-point attempt. That's seven more points in the point-total bank for Big Blue's undrafted rookie kicker sensation.

Dominic Zvada Giants rookie scoring record tracker: Week 7 update

As you’re probably aware of by now, I’ve been tracking two Giants scoring records Zvada has a legitimate shot at breaking: Ali Haji-Sheikh’s rookie mark of 127 points from 1983 and Jay Feely’s all-time single-season record of 148 points from 2005.

Here’s where things stand through six games:

Zvada is five points ahead of Haji-Sheikh’s rookie-record pace and five behind Feely’s all-time mark. He’s also made more field goals than either kicker had at this point in their respective seasons, which is pretty impressive considering he just spent Week 5 missing three of them.

Zvada is 13-for-16 on field goals and a perfect 9-for-9 on extra points. The Washington game certainly wasn’t pretty, but one rough afternoon hasn’t done much damage to his quest. I’m willing to forgive the occasional malfunction if the former Michigan standout can finally be the answer to New York's kicking woes.

Next up is a trip to Houston to face the 2-4 Texans, who have won back-to-back games after starting the season 0-4. Their defense hasn’t exactly resembled last year’s juggernaut, but with Big Blue’s ground game going nowhere and head coach John Harbaugh still figuring out who’s starting at quarterback, special teams could play a bigger role than usual.

And wouldn’t you know it, Houston has been pretty generous to opposing kickers this season:

  • Week 1 vs. Bills: 12 points
  • Week 2 vs. Bengals: 8 points
  • Week 3 vs. Colts: 13 points
  • Week 4 vs. Cowboys: 10 points
  • Week 5 vs. Titans: 3 points
  • Week 6 vs. Jaguars: 7 points

That’s 53 points through six games, or 8.83 per week. If Zvada matches that average Sunday, he’d be sitting around 57 points entering the Giants’ Week 8 bye.

The G-Men could certainly use a win before the week off, and with the offense looking like the Riddler with all those question marks, I’m not opposed to leaning into a Zvada leg-day masterclass. A big afternoon could do wonders for his pursuit of Giants scoring history.
