New York Giants fans will always remember Drew Lock as the quarterback who went berserk in a meaningless Week 17 win over the Colts last season. You know, the guy who cost Big Blue a shot at the No. 1 pick. Funny enough, that's looking like it worked out for New York.
That game turned into full-blown madness. Five total touchdowns. One of the best offensive showings of the entire season. It was complete chaos. And while that outing might’ve felt like a final victory lap in New York, it turns out Lock had one more lap in him. And this time, it came in Seattle.
Back in the Pacific Northwest for another stint with the Seahawks, Lock turned in a preseason performance against the Chiefs that, for lack of a better word, was surgical. He completed 10-of-12 passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns, added 34 more yards on the ground, and led three scoring drives in four possessions. He looked just like the guy who eviscerated the Colts.
Drew Lock’s redemption arc in Seattle is off to a flying start
Somehow, some way, the guy who derailed a tank job just a few months ago is starting to make it look like the Seahawks were onto something. Turns out, they were. After all, this is a guy who went 1-4 as the Giants' starter last year, whose four TD passes against Indy accounted for 66.67% of his total passing TDs for the season.
Lock might be back to being that high-end backup who flashes just enough to keep teams interested. He looked solid. And he looked like someone who should’ve been locked into QB2 duties the moment he landed in Seattle.
There’s no quarterback battle with Sam Darnold. That’s his job. But the trust is real. Lock played deep into the second half against Kansas City, and when the Seahawks needed juice, he provided it. The timing was better. The decisions were cleaner. And he had a 30-yard scramble that showed he's still got some wheels. The two touchdowns to Jake Bobo were just bonus material.
It's clear Lock won't be the starter, but he and Darnold could be to Seahawks rookie QB Jalen Milroe what Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston are to Jaxson Dart. And that could prove invaluable. It's only a preseason game, but Lock looks like a great signing. If he can be a strong backup to Darnold and a quality leader to Milroe, this whole thing might actually work.
Lock put on an absolute show against KC, but the 28-year-old costing Big Blue the No. 1 pick might've been the best thing to happen to them. It yielded Abdul Carter and Dart. And with the way those two have been playing in the preseason, Giants fans aren't losing sleep over it.
