Field Yates just made the Giants’ draft outlook feel even more wide open

If you thought what the New York Giants were going to do at No. 5 was a mystery, wait until you hear about the seemingly endless possibilities 32 picks later.

There's a clear top five prospects in place for the Giants, but you never know until the name gets called. Miami's Francis Mauigoa, Notre Dame's Jeremiyah Love, and the Ohio State trio of Sonny Styles, Caleb Downs, and Carnell Tate all figure to be in play. But that's just one of the seven picks they're set to make on draft weekend.

John Schmeelk from Giants Huddle asked prominent ESPN NFL insider and draft expert Field Yates what position groups or what he's hearing about Big Blue's 37th pick, and let's just say, Yates left it open

"I don't know that Kayden McDonald gets there. There's a chance he's long gone, the nose tackle from Ohio State. ... Sometimes you need to bolster the run defense -- you just take the best run stuffer. Even if he might be a 50% of the play time type of player. But McDonald would be awesome at 37.

Brandon Cisse, Chris Johnson amongst the corners that could be floating around at 37 as well. Wide receiver would be 'What type of receiver are you looking for?' Because there is every shape, size, and variety of wideout this year."

Field Yates made it pretty clear Giants are still all over the place at 37

So let me get this straight -- the Giants either take the best run defender in the draft, or they pivot to taking a potentially game-changing corner, or any wide receiver that fits their needs, because, as Yates said, they can choose their own adventure.

It's interesting that the draft expert omitted an offensive lineman at 37. There's a clear need for a starting right guard after Greg Van Roten left in free agency to... remain a free agent. Even after the G-Men signed Daniel Faalele and Lucas Patrick and brought back Evan Neal and Joshua Ezeudu, it's still a need. With prospects like Emmanuel Pregnon (Oregon) and Chase Bisontis (Texas A&M) projected to go early on Day 2, they could also be in play -- or maybe not.

At the end of the day, this is what happens when a team has as many holes as the Giants do. It also doesn’t help with Dexter Lawrence’s trade request hanging over everything.

There isn’t one obvious answer at 37 -- they're at the mercy of the first 36 picks (shocker), and Yates basically confirmed it. They could go defense, they could add another weapon for Jaxson Dart, or they could try to patch the offensive line -- and all of it would make sense. At this point, it’s anyone’s guess what they end up doing.
