Giants better hope training camp solves their biggest remaining headache

The hiring of John Harbaugh solved most of the problems for the New York Giants, but a few still slipped through the cracks. After all, when you're cleaning up the giant-sized mess that Brian Daboll left behind, it's hard to get to everything. Rome wasn't built in a day.

The Giants fixed up their offensive line, improved their secondary, and added a true defensive weapon into the fold in Arvell Reese this offseason. But perhaps the most important improvements they made this offseason were by improving the group of pass-catchers Jaxson Dart will throw to.

Compounded by the return of Malik Nabers, the Giants made small moves at WR, drafting Malachi Fields and bringing in an army of established veterans in Darnell Mooney, Calvin Austin, Odell Beckham, Braxton Berrios, and JuJu Smith-Schuster, but they are navigating a cluttered WR room this summer.

The Giants' receiver room has more questions than answers at this point

While Bleacher Report's Brant Sobleski went over the to-do lists for every NFL team before the offseason, figuring out the mess that is the Giants' receiver room was on their list. There are a lot of ways this position battle could play out, and no one truly knows what to expect during training camp.

"Unfortunately, Big Blue still has significant questions among Dart's targets," Sobleski wrote. "With Malik Nabers still recovering from an ACL injury and possibly not being ready for the start of the regular season, the Giants went out and signed Odell Beckham Jr., JuJu Smith-Schuster and Braxton Berrios to join a non-descript group of receivers. The next two months will help decide what options can actually play and which can be cut."

Sobleski noted that Nabers is no guarantee to be ready for Week 1 amid his recovery from a torn ACL, and Darnell Mooney is more inconsistent than a Guy Ritchie film. Fields has no NFL experience under his belt, and Calvin Austin isn't much more of a deep threat. None of these options are calming.

For as fun as the nostalgia trip with Odell Beckham Jr. is, he's still 32 with a lengthy injury history. Who knows if his body can even hold up beyond training camp. Berrios isn't much more than a special teamer to replace Gunner Olzsewski, and Smith-Schuster isn't a guy you want in an every-down role. With Nabers, this rotation is okay, without him it's below average.

Thankfully, the G-Men are no longer in a place where Jalin Hyatt is being relied upon on a consistent basis, but if Malik Nabers' recovery takes longer than we expect, hopefully one of these many wide receivers steps up into even a semi-consistent option for Jaxson Dart in training camp.
