Giants could lose quarterback option as Jets injury changes everything

At least he wouldn't have to move?

While the New York Giants are figuring out their own quarterback situation, half an hour away, the New York Jets might be scrambling to do the same when they previously didn't think they'd have to. The Jets signed Justin Fields this offseason to be their starter but unfortunately, Fields was injured during Thursday morning's practice.

What does this have to do with the Giants, one might wonder? Well, with Fields potentially out for an extended period of time (Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has reported that it's a toe injury but doesn't know the severity yet), the Jets might be forced to look for another quarterback option alongside Tyrod Taylor.

If they want to find someone who could fill in as a decent backup and start a few games during the season, they might not have to look far. The Giants have three quarterbacks on their roster and as soon as they brought Jameis Winston in, he already seemed like he'd be the one on the outs. That became even more true when the Giants traded back into the first round to snag Jaxson Dart.

Jameis Winston could make sense for Jets after Justin Fields injury

As mentioned, if Fields' injury is severe and he's forced to miss an extended chunk of time, the Jets have former Giants signal-caller Tyrod Taylor as the next man up. Behind Taylor are Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook, neither of whom have thrown a pass in the NFL.

Winston could make a lot of sense for the Jets as a starter/backup option. He's got experience in both departments and while, yes, he does throw a ton of interceptions, his chaotic game can be a lot of fun to watch and he could help the Jets win games. Winston also wouldn't have to move considering he's already playing for a New York team.

The Giants are already planning on having Russell Wilson as their starter in 2025 and Dart is expected to be their franchise quarterback (or at least that's the hope). Where does that leave Winston then? Trading him could at least get the Giants something in return for him that they could use to bolster their team for next year and beyond.

Maybe the Jets don't end up needing to go this route but if they do, it wouldn't be the craziest idea for them to do business with the Giants and bring Jameis Winston in as a quarterback option for the upcoming season.
