When the 2025 offseason began, one thing was clear: the New York Giants needed a massive overhaul in their quarterback room. Following the disastrous fallout with former first-round draft pick Daniel Jones, which ultimately led to his release, significant changes were set to come under center.
Of course, we all know how the overhaul went: signing Russell Wilson, after an up-and-down year with the Steelers, and drafting Jaxson Dart in the first round of this year's NFL Draft.
However, perhaps the most crucial move of all may have been signing Jameis Winston, the former longtime starter for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and now a well-traveled backup. I mean, just listen to this guy speak to SNY.
"I was blessed to be out there, man...to put on this uniform and shine with my teammates. We had some fun. I am representing one of the best organizations in the NFL, one of the best cities in the world, and one of the greatest fanbases."

Tell me you aren't fired up after that.
Despite the lack of excitement from his signing, Jameis Winston was the right QB for the Giants
Winston gave love to the organization, the city, and the fans all in 25 seconds: 10/10, no notes. When he initially signed with the team, he said he wanted the team to smile more. So far? Mission accomplished. You can't help but smile whenever this guy gets a microphone in front of him. Winston is the type of guy that is great for where this Giants team is right now.
They have budding young stars on both sides of the field; the quarterback situation is what it is, and most importantly, the general manager and head coach are fighting for their jobs. This team and organization need someone to keep it loose, and Winston fills that role perfectly.
It's why, no matter what the order of QBs is on the depth chart, Winston needs to be one of them. He's the locker room guy that you read about. Fans already love him with his speeches and goofy persona, and teammates have nothing but good things to say about him.
For an actual football role, his snaps may be few and far between, but in terms of being a glue guy for this roster, he's the most important player and the one this team really needs.
