The NFL trade deadline is this Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET, and the expectation across the league is that the New York Giants are expected to make a huge trade. The worst secret in the league has been that they are looking to acquire a big-name running back, with Jonathan Taylor of the Indianapolis Colts being high on their list.
The thing with Taylor is that it has been reported that the Colts are seeking a lot in return for their star running back. The return package that the Carolina Panthers received from the San Francisco 49ers for Christian McCaffrey years ago, which was a second-rounder, a third-rounder, a fourth-rounder, and a fifth-round pick. Given the Giants have surrendered some draft capital already this year, that would not be ideal.
But on Sunday, a new report indicates that the Giants made an offer for Taylor, but have since walked away from the negotiations table.
Giants reportedly pull trade offer for Jonathan Taylor
FOX Sports NFL insider Jay Glazer reported on Sunday that the Giants made an offer to the Colts for Taylor — a second- and a fifth-round pick. Glazer said that the Colts were not interested in that offer, so the Giants pulled it and walked away.
So, given that there is two days left until the trade deadline, the odds of the Giants landing Taylor just took a significant hit. It's not to say that the Giants lowballed their offer for Taylor. In fact, there is more reporting that the Giants probably made the best offer to the Colts.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports that the Giants were the only team to offer a second-round pick plus additional draft compensation. Schultz says the belief around the league is that the Colts will opt to keep Taylor unless a team makes them an offer that is too good for them to turn down.
Where could the Giants pivot to at trade deadline after pulling Jonathan Taylor offer?
Even though you read that the Giants walk away from the negotiatiing table, it doesn't necessarily mean that talks will be one completely. Plans can change for both the Giants and the Colts.
Ryan Dunleavy brings up the point that even though the Giants walked away, "Don't be surprised by a change of heart on either side by 4pm Tuesday."
Once the trade deadline clock begins winding down, it could lead to some desperation. The Giants could very well decide to make a more lucrative offer to the Colts if the team feels that Taylor would help the team that much more, especially with Cam Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy Jr. both dealing with injuries. Or, the Colts could decide that the second-rounder is enough to move on from Taylor. It may all change once we get closer to the deadline on Tuesday.
If the Giants are fully out on Taylor, it will be interesting to see where they pivot to. Derrick Henry, who Harbaugh knows from his time with the Baltimore Ravens, is reportedly not being shopped by the team. Tony Pollard of the Tennessee Titans is also off the table. So those are two huge running backs on the block that are no longer available. Perhaps the Giants could instead make a push for interior defensive line help, primarily to help them stop the run.
We should get a better idea of what the Giants' plans are once we get closer to Tuesday. For now, it looks like acquiring Taylor is less likely than ever, thanks to Glazer's reporting.
