The New York Giants enter their Week 9 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles atop the NFC East with a 4-2-1 record, and that start gives them a favorable path to win the division and return to the playoffs for the first time since 2022.
With the NFL trade deadline approaching, the G-Men are in a strong position to address their positional needs and make a splash. New York’s standing in the division suggests a move could help them in the second half of the season, and John Harbaugh and Joe Schoen appear prepared to make one.
Big Blue has been linked to several big names ahead of the deadline, most notably Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor. Still, the Giants could upgrade not just at running back, but in other areas as well.
CBS Sports lists defensive line as the Giants biggest trade deadline need
Josh Edwards of CBS Sports recently broke down one position of need and potential options for all 32 teams at the trade deadline, and for the G-Men, he identified defensive line, which makes sense given their struggling run defense this season.
The Giants’ run defense ranks near the bottom of the league, as Big Blue has allowed 128.1 rushing yards per game, which is 26th in the NFL. They have allowed 897 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns across seven games, and they need to be better.
The Giants' defense has generated only nine sacks this season, tying for 30th in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins. It doesn’t help that Brian Burns and Tremaine Edmunds are sidelined for the rest of the season, and the team appears to need help.
Harbaugh showed interest in former Tennessee Titans defensive lineman Jeffrey Simmons, who was recently traded to the Chicago Bears for a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 first-round pick, and a 2027 fourth-round pick, showing that a trade for a top lineman could be costly. Still, the G-Men may have the picks to support a trade like that if they choose to go “all-in.”
The Colts traded DeForest Buckner back to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2027 fourth-round draft pick, raising the question of whether they would also trade Grover Stewart and what price they might ask, with Edwards listing Stewart as a potential option for the Giants to pursue at the deadline.
Edwards also listed Commanders’ Daron Payne, Eagles’ Moro Ojomo, Cardinals’ Roy Lopez, and Dolphins’ Zach Sieler as potential trade-deadline targets. All would be significant upgrades for the Giants, although I am not sure Washington or Philadelphia would be willing to trade within the division.
Giants fans want to see the front office make a splash, whether that’s JT or somebody else we don’t know yet, but Harbaugh and Schoen have to address the defensive line first.
