The New York Giants couldn't even make it out of the first few days of training camp without a concerning injury that threatens to change the shape of the depth chart, as young wide receiver Bryce Ford-Wheaton was ruled out for the rest of the 2025 season after suffering a torn Achilles.
The Giants wasted no time in signing a wide receiver who could help mitigate the loss of a young player on the rise who was trying to put his injury problems in the past, though he might find his talents put to better use as a special teams ace and top returner.
The Giants agreed to terms with wide receiver Gunner Olszewski, who had been on the team since the 2023 season, in the aftermath of the Ford-Wheaton injury. There is a very good chance that Olszewski ends up playing a somewhat noteworthy special teams role.
Giants sign Gunner Olszewski after Bryce Ford-Wheaton Achilles injury
Olszewski came to the New England Patriots in 2019 as an undrafted free agent out of Division II Bemidji State. After three seasons in New England, which included an All-Pro nomination after leading the NFL in punt return yards in 2020, Olszewski latched on with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Olsewski spent parts of two seasons with Pittsburgh before latching on with the Giants midway through the 2023 season. Olsewzki didn't record any stats in the 2024 season, as he suffered a groin injury in Week 1 and was immediately ruled out for the rest of the campaign. He spent most of 2025 as a free agent.
Olszewski has caught just 15 passes in his professional career, proving that the Giants are not expecting him to be on the end of many throws from either Russell Wilson ro Jaxson Dart. He's a depth piece, but that return ability gives him upside and a chance to be more than just a camp body.
Losing Ford-Wheaton is not going to destabilize the offense, but the back end of the depth chart and the special teams unit sustained a serious loss as a result of this injury. Be it for a week or the res of the season, Olsewzki provides the Giants with some much-needed reassurance.
