The New York Giants have made waves this offseason in the wide receiver room, recently signing a bevy of veterans at the position. Familiar names like Odell Beckham Jr. and JuJu Smith-Schuster now headline the group of pass catchers behind Malik Nabers.

But what if the most dynamic wideout of the bunch was already in the building?

Rookie receiver Malachi Fields impressed during minicamp, and now he's closing in on a starting job in Matt Nagy's offense. The third-round pick will be one to watch for Giants fans throughout training camp.

Giants' Malachi Fields could have the inside track to a starting WR spot

Bleacher Report analyst Brent Sobleski recently named six rookies who could be surprise starters when Week 1 finally rolls around. Fields comfortably made the list.

Sobleski broke down the Giants' rookie's situation, saying, "Plenty of name recognition is now found among Jaxson Dart's wide receivers. However, the team invested in Fields before going out and trying to fill out the rest of the room. The organization sees this year's 74th overall pick as a legitimate piece of the puzzle."

Fields was the fourth draft pick of the John Harbaugh era in New York. Not only was the team interested in him as a prospect, but they traded away three draft picks to get him. That's not a player you stash on the bench.

The former Notre Dame receiver has a big frame and vertical ability, giving him a unique skill set among the Giants' receivers. While players like Calvin Austin III and Darnell Mooney outclass the rookie in speed and elusiveness, he offers something they can't.

He's a relatively raw prospect and ran a limited route tree in college, so he shouldn't be expected to immediately become a star in New York. But his ability outside the numbers makes him a threat to steal a starting job by the end of training camp.

Nabers' Week 1 status is still up in the air. The superstar wideout is still recovering from the knee injury that ended his 2025 campaign. If he's not ready to go by the start of the 2026 season, Fields would be competing with Mooney and Smith-Schuster for the second starting outside receiver spot.

Harbaugh and the Giants have invested more in the rookie than they have in either of those veterans. Don't be surprised if he steals a starting job by the end of training camp.
