Giants make aggressive trade up to land Malachi Fields for Jaxson Dart

The New York Giants are absolutely crushing the 2026 NFL Draft. After leaving Day 1 with Arvell Reese and Francis Mauigoa, the G-Men were slated to only have one Day 2 pick at 37, which they used on Tennessee cornerback Colton Hood.

But instead of sitting the rest of Friday night out, Big Blue's FOMO kicked in hard, resulting in a Round 3 trade with the Cleveland Browns. New York sent their 105th and 145th picks this year, along with their 4th next year, to grab Notre Dame wide receiver Malachi Fields 74th overall. That's a crazy amount to give up. But I love the aggressive move.

But Jaxson Dart finally gets a new weapon.

The 6-foot-4, 218-pound wideout is exactly the kind of offensive weapon the Giants need to take a real step forward in 2026. While playing in a run-heavy offense behind Jeremiyah Love, Fields still managed to put up some decent numbers, catching 36 passes for 630 yards and five scores last season.

Dart needed more offensive firepower. This scratches that itch a little bit. Enough to be interesting. Fields isn't going to wow anyone with his route running or separation abilities, but you can't teach size. And he has plenty of it. The 22-year-old could become a reliable boundary "X" receiver opposite Malik Nabers, with the potential to push for snaps as he gets acclimated to the pros.

Giants’ FOMO lands Malachi Fields as Jaxson Dart’s new weapon

The former Fighting Irishman joins a fairly crowded receiver room led by Nabers, who's still recovering from a season-ending ACL injury. And while there are a lot of bodies in the room, aside from Leek, the cast of characters leaves a lot to be desired. Which is where Fields can make the most of his opportunity.

Earlier this offseason, the Giants signed free agents Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin III to one-year deals to help flesh out the room. Neither signing felt overly exciting, as evidenced by adding Fields into the fold. However, those weren't the only receiver moves the team has made.

They re-signed Isaiah Hodgins on a one-year deal and have recently been flirting with an Odell Beckham Jr. reunion. It's unclear what the interest in OBJ will be after taking Fields 74th, but the 33-year-old has already worked out and taken a physical.

Even with seemingly unlimited receiver options, the rookie figures to fight for snaps sooner than later. He's no Jordyn Tyson or Carnell Tate, but he'll do. Plus, the Giants are looking to be a more ground-focused team in 2026 anyway.

Still, it's nice to see the team properly investing in its franchise quarterback. Another smart draft pick for Big Blue.
