Ian Rapoport just dropped a Joe Schoen update that leaves Giants fans with zero hope

What are the Giants thinking?

For the third consecutive season, the New York Giants are an unmitigated disaster. The team is 2-13 entering Week 17 after blowing countless fourth quarter leads. Because of this, they are in the running for the No. 1 overall pick.

The Giants already took action, firing head coach Brian Daboll after their fourth quarter collapse against the Chicago Bears. Following him shortly afterward was defensive coordinator Shane Bowen. Interim head coach Mike Kafka hasn't been able to right the ship since being promoted. Given how lost the team looked, fans were expecting the team to clean house and start over.

That doesn't appear to be the case.

During a news hit on NFL Network, NFL insider Ian Rapoport spoke about the Giants' thought process if they do get the No. 1 overall pick. Rapoport says that the team could evaluate all options, including quarterback despite trading up for Jaxson Dart next year. But there was one huge news nugget on the screen, and that's that general manager Joe Schoen is "likely to remain" with the team for the draft.

NFL Network says Joe Schoen 'likely to remain' with Giants for NFL Draft

That's not the news that some Giants fans want to hear. The Giants have shown in recent memory that they don't like to really make organizational decisions in full. As in, move on from the head coach and general manager at the same time. The Giants have shown to do things in half measures.

Look no further than the Giants firing head coach Pat Shurmur after the 2019 season, but keeping general manager Dave Gettleman to hire another head coach. It essentially kicked the can down the road. After the 2021 season, Joe Judge was fired as head coach while Gettleman "retired." That was two years after keeping Gettleman and moving on from Shurmur.

Could the Giants really opt to kick the can down the road again by keeping Schoen around, even though his recent track record has proven to be lackluster?

Don't get us wrong, there have been moves he's hit on. There was the trade for pass rusher Brian Burns, the Malik Nabers draft pick in 2024, and the signing of offensive tackle Jermaine Eluemunor. But there have been plenty of misses. Obviously, the two that stand out is letting Saquon Barkley and Xavier McKinney leave in free agency for the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers respectively. Barkley went on to win a Super Bowl with the Eagles, while McKinney had become a leader on the Packers defense. Then there were the draft misses of offensive tackle Evan Neal, cornerback Deonte Banks, and wide receiver Jalin Hyatt. Most importantly, the Giants have just 11 wins in the past three seasons.

Given all of that, Schoen detractors will be puzzled as to why the Giants would continue to let him run things as general manager. Plus, how will Schoen affect the head coach search? And, as SNY's Connor Hughes asks, would they really let Schoen run the draft, potentially with the No. 1 overall pick, and then move on from him?

Giants fans looking for more clarity and stability aren't getting that just one week before the regular season finale.
